My contempt for the shading technique I used in Yucateca is no secret,  so it probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone that I’ve just embarked upon a complete overhaul of the issue to remove the graytones.  Fortunately this is fairly easy to do,  and shouldn’t take more than a few days to bring it up to speed with the standard style.  I’m not doing any redrawing right now,  just fixing the shading.  There are a number of reasons I’m doing this:

  • I’ve always hated the shading of Issue 2.  It looks futuristic,  which is totally out-of-place in this comic.
  • It will not reproduce well in print.  One of the main reasons I haven’t offered any print issues since Issue 1 is that I’ve been worrying about how Issue 2 would look.  Once I finish fixing it, it will be print-ready.
  • Now there will be more style consistency in the archive.  Issue 1 will be the only issue with a different art style.  (My working process was really bad in Issue 1,  so fixing these pages would be a huge amount of trouble and is not going to happen anytime soon.)

So that’s the story.  You can go check out the new look,  which has currently been applied through page 3.  I’ll post again when the transformation is complete.

Edit 7/19:   The transformation is complete.  Yucateca is now presented entirely with the newer dot-shading method.  Aside from this its mostly unchanged (I did fix one rather glaring drawing error) but I did change a couple lines of dialog to fix the implied tomb which never materialized.  This is one advantage of webcomics,  you can go back and change things if you want to.  It wreaks havoc with the canon,  of course,  but I don’t think anyone is keeping any kind of reference for Sunrise yet,  so that’s not a big concern.  In any case,  check it out.  It’s the same story you remember,  except that all that ugly gray stuff is gone.

Like the new shading technique John. Also enjoying this issue very much so far. Look forward to seeing the redraw of issue 2 and being able to purchase it in print. If you do redraw issue 1 then I guess the version I purchased (the original) will become something of a collectors item in the future when Sunrise goes big :-)

I suppose it would…although it's unlikely to happen, as redrawing Issue 1 would be about as much work as drawing a whole new issue. Fixing these Yucateca pages doesn't take much more than ten minutes per page. In any case, printed issues should become available again sometime in the next few months.
